Who’s out the most?

To no surprise the guys with the most plate appearances will naturally make the most outs. You probably guessed it; Reyes is near the top of the list. However it’s not as bad as you may think. In 2008, he led the NL in outs (516), but he also got on base the most times (271) the 5th most in the NL. And that statistic isn’t counting the Reached on Error calls that Reyes probably gets in his favor throughout the season. We can create a ratio out of this much like we have for Ks and Walks. Reyes’ Outs/Times on Base ratio is 1.904 (516/271) tied with Carlos Delgado of all people (461/242) which ranks them 41st highest out of all NL players with 500 or more plate appearances. Interestingly enough David Wright has a ratio of 1.631 (468/287) which is 8 places from the bottom of the list (a good thing).

So far this year with hitters who have had 100 or more plate appearances: Reyes is tied for 9th in the NL in outs (105) and Carlos Beltran has been on base the most times in the NL this year (72 times). Ryan Church has the highest Outs/On base ratio as a Met with 2.18 (83/43; ranked 30th in the NL). Beltran has the lowest ratio as a Met at 1.24 (89/72; ranked 3rd lowest in the NL).

Data is up to date as of 5/14/09.
